New Zealand in Shorts

We say »Ngā mihi o te tau hou!« -  »Greetings to the New Year!« and celebrate the Māori New Year Matariki with New Zealand. This official holiday takes place on 20 June this year and is one of the first indigenous holidays to be reintroduced in the world. The Matariki celebrations include a variety of activities, including the sharing of stories and legends. We will dive into cinematic narratives with a documentary short film programme and the group »Kia Ora Berlin« will provide insights into the meaning and myths surrounding Matariki.

A Delicate Canvas

Note: After this event, there will be a special stargazing session in »Matariki - The Sky above New Zealand« at 8 pm in the planetarium hall of the Zeiss-Großplanetarium, a special stargazing session on the starry sky above New Zealand.

The New Zealand Embassy is proud to acknowledge and celebrate Matariki, recognising its deep cultural significance and the values it represents for all New Zealanders. Matariki is a moment to honour those who have passed, give thanks for the present, and plan for the future. 

We warmly welcome everyone to join us for a small reception at 9:15pm after the »Sternstunde« to further celebrate Matariki and its meaningful traditions.
