Youth Research Centre Helleum II
The Helleum II is the youth research centre of Stiftung Planetarium Berlin. Here, science and astronomy come together to inspire young people to conduct independent research and discovery.
In workshops, projects and independent research projects, students learn that STEM subjects – that is, science, technology, engineering and mathematics – come alive when they are linked to questions about the universe:
- How do astronomers measure the movement of stars?
- What physical forces are at work in space – and also on Earth?
- How can the laws of nature be replicated and understood in the laboratory?
And much more.
The 'Lernwerkstatt' (exploration lab) Helleum II offers a learning environment that combines a workshop, laboratory and observatory, sparking curiosity, motivating and encouraging research.
The neighbouring HELLEUM Children's Research Centre is operated by the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the District and the Senate Department for Education. HELLEUM's programmes are aimed at kindergarten and primary school children. Further information can be found on the HELLEUM Children's Research Centre website.

What is a 'Lernwerkstatt' (exploration lab)?
The Youth Research Centre sees itself as a 'Lernwerkstatt' (exploration lab). 'Lernwerkstättentt' (exploration labs) offer pedagogically designed spaces for experience that promote independent learning, research, and problem solving. Without being given predetermined tasks, learners use the materials and tools provided to discover individual questions, and actively work on addressing them.

Workshops for school classes
For secondary schools, Helleum II offers 4-hour workshops on various thematic learning environments that combine theory and practice. The workshops are ideal for project days, field trips, in-depth study of the natural sciences, and preparation for competitions and research papers.
'Jugend forscht' – Your Path to the Student Research Centre
In addition to workshops, Helleum II is also a student research centre.
Here, interested students can:
- Develop their own STEM research projects
- Use of laboratory and astronomy equipment
- Be provided with support for 'Jugend forsch' and other competitions.
This makes Helleum II a springboard for the next generation of researchers – from their own initial project idea to the competition.
If you are interested, please contact helleum2@planetarium.berlin.
How can I participate?
Whether as a class in the context of a workshop or with your own project, our programmes invite you to experience research up close.
- Teachers: Book a workshop for your class and let your students immerse themselves in the world of research and astronomy.
