Matariki – The Sky above New Zealand

The star cluster known as the »Pleiades« is most visible in Berlin’s night sky during winter. In New Zealand, these stars are called »Matariki« and their first appearance in the dawn twilight of late June marks the beginning of the Māori lunar new year. Since 2022, Matariki has been recognized as a public holiday in New Zealand—this year, it will be celebrated on June 20th.

We invite you to join us for a very special »Sternstunde«: travel with us from Berlin to the night skies of Aotearoa New Zealand. In collaboration with the group Kia Ora Berlin, we’ll explore the cultural significance of Matariki, immerse ourselves in ancient Māori myths, and embark on a 360° journey through space to discover celestial objects up close.

Kia Ora Berlin is a community group that brings together New Zealanders living in Berlin, hosting monthly gatherings and sharing the spirit of Kiwi culture with Germany.

The event will be conducted in English. This event is part of a larger Matariki celebration happening at the Planetarium on the 20th of June. Stay tuned for more details on the program, coming soon.
