Associations

Three non-profit support associations support the work of the astronomical facilities of Stiftung Planetarium Berlin: Förderverein der Archenhold-Sternwarte and und des Zeiss-Großplanetariums Berlin e. V., Sternfreunde Berlin e. V. and Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte e. V. Are you an amateur astronomer and would you like to exchange ideas with like-minded people, set up projects and share your enthusiasm for the facilities of Stiftung Planetarium Berlin?

Find out more about the work of the associations, what they are committed to, and how you can become a member.

Förderverein der Archenhold-Sternwarte und des Zeiss-Großplanetariums Berlin e.V.

The purpose of this non-profit association is to provide moral, financial and material support for the Archenhold-Sternwarte and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin. It was founded on 27 November, 1990. Its members are students and adults who all have one thing in common: they are friends and supporters of the Archenhold-Sternwarte and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium.

Members support the development and operation of the two centres in a variety of ways. Dozens of large and small projects have been realised since the association was founded.

Sternfreunde Berlin e.V.

As a recognised German youth welfare organisation, Sternfreunde Berlin e. V. actively introduces children and young people aged 8 and over to astronomy. The non-profit association was founded in 1995, but can already look back on a 40-year history at the former PionierPalat (today the Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum Wuhlheide, FEZ). The association teaches astronomy, physics, computer science and mathematics, offers telescopes and photographic equipment as well as tutorials in digital image processing.

Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte e.V.

The association Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte e. V. can look back on a long tradition. The Wilhelm-Foerster-Institut was founded as early as 1947, and in 1953 it became part of the non-profit organisation Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte e. V., which was funded by the state of Berlin. Before the Berlin Senate merged the city's two planetariums and observatories into the newly founded Stiftung Planetarium Berlin in 2016, the association Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte e. V. operated the Planetarium am Insulaner and the Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte. The association has been supporting scientific and practical astronomical work at these two institutions since 1 July, 2016.

The association stands for practical astronomy. Here, interested Berliners can explore the universe themselves with the telescope and try their hand at observing the moon or the theory of physics.

The programme is diverse, ranging from the history of astronomy to astronomical photography to the compact course, Black Holes. You can find all the working groups on offer on the association's website.

Please note: The working groups are currently all in German.
